Rhythms Program and Fencing

With no baseball this year, our oldest son asked to give fencing a try. Tonight was his second class. So far so good. That is him striking at the guy in black (the instructor). We never knew all of the history behind fencing or the rules. It is not like the battles you see in Pirates of the Caribbean movie, instead it is full of etiquette and respect for your opponent.

Yesterday afternoon I was lucky enough to attend the Rhythms Program at the boys' school. This program is mainly done by the PE teachers with assistance from the music teachers - a fine showcase of the "specials." Each class performed a number from some sort of musical (Lion King, A Chorus Line, Grease, Little Mermaid, Sound of Music, etc.) with props, costumes, physical activity, and choreography. The kids did great! I didn't get the greatest pictures (trying to video tape without a tripod at the same time as snapping pics is virtually impossible - they both suffer) but wanted to share anyway. Above is after 3 of the 4th grade classes performed "The Hustle." I know it is tricky to recognize him with a dark afro and glasses.

Below was taken during "The Circle of Life" performance with a parachute. A great song and a very appropriate prop. The teachers even performed "Thriller" as the grand finale - the parents gave them a standing O. Great fun!

The Rhythm Program sounds so neat. How cool for the kids to do something a little different and very cool that you were able to attend. We had an Olympic Fencer come to school to talk and she talked about the rules and how points are scored. It was not like I thought it was either. I was pretty impressed with it.

The fencing sounds pretty interesting. I wish we were able to have a school program as cool as the one you got to see. It sounds like a lot of fun. Have a great weekend.
